New 2023 TV Shows Featuring Latinos

So far in 2023, there are about 20 new scripted shows that have been announced with premiere dates that include Latino or Hispanic actors on primetime and streaming channels.

This crop of shows includes Latinos not just being cast in supporting roles — but serving as the main protagonists or series lead. Gina Rodriguez returns to TV as the star of “Not Dead Yet” a comedy about an obituary writer who talks to ghosts; Ramón Rodríguez leads crime procedural show “Will Trent” based on the book series; Pedro Pascal is taking on another famous franchise with the role of Joel in the “Last of Us” TV adaptation of the video game; Laz Alonso is a space bounty hunter in Netflix’s “My Dad is Bounty Hunter" animated series and Carlos Valdes plays a man falling in love in 1990’s in Hulu’s “Up Here".”

January

  • Spanish actress Paz Vega stars as a lawyer and weapons specialist in this unique new limited series. Spanning 25 years, the show follows a crew of thieves trying to break into a vault filled with $7 billion in bonds. The show is loosely based on real-life events.

    Premiere date: Jan. 1, 2023 on Netflix.

  • Ramón Rodríguez stars as Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Will Trent who endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s foster care system. He uses his unique point of view and observational skills to solve cases. Show is based on a book series.

    Premiere date: Jan. 3, 2023 10 p.m. (EST) on ABC. Airs Tuesdays.

  • Dania Ramirez stars as Philadelphia police officer Nikki Batista's whose son goes missing in this new case-of-the-week procedural show. She joins the special unit to help other people find their loved ones, even as she searches for her own.

    Premiere date: Jan. 8, 2023 at 9 p.m. (EST)on Fox. Airs Mondays.

  • Pedro Pascal stars as Joel, a survivor of a post-apocalyptic world hired to smuggle a teen out of a quarantine zone in this new series based on the video game. The show also stars Gabriel Luna.

    Premiere date: Jan. 15 on HBO Max.

  • Released from prison, a mother tries to regain the respect of her daughter, who loves lucha libre wrestling, by entering the ring as a mysterious persona in this new Spanish-language series.

    Premiere date: Jan. 25, 2023 on Netflix.

  • Benjamin Bratt plays a recurring role role in this new series about a woman who can tell when people are lying in this new mystery-of-the -week crime show. Dascha Polanco, Luis Guzmán and David David Castañeda are expected to appear.

    Premiere date: Jan. 26, 2023 on Peacock. Airs Thursdays.

  • Rodrigo Santoro stars as a police detective in this spinoff series of the novel and 2010’s show “Teen Wolf”, which features a new group of teens who have been bitten by werewolves.

    Premiere date: Jan. 26 on Paramount+.

  • Mexican American actress Mariel Molino stars as Elena Santos, a woman hired as a live-in nanny to a wealthy widower and his young son. She learns that more is going on in their building than meets the eye.

    Premiere date: Jan. 30 on Freeform.

 

February

Gina Rodriguez stars as an obit writer who can see ghosts in “Not Dead Yet.”

  • Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Bryana Salaz star in this new spinoff to “On My Block” where four teen friends work to reverse a curse after a peculiar old box seems to bring misfortune into their lives.

    Premiere date: Feb. 2 on Netflix. Cancelled after one season.

  • Gina Rodriguez returns to TV with “Not Dead Yet” as Nell, a woman who returns home to the U.S. and has to restart her life after a breakup. She lands a job at her old newspaper as an obit writer, and winds up seeing ghosts who give her advice.

    Premiere date: Feb. 8, 2023 at 9:30 p.m. (EST) on ABC. Airs Wednesdays.

  • Afro-Cuban actor Laz Alonzo stars as a secret intergalactic bounty hunter who winds up juggling fatherhood and a dangerous job in space when his two kids sneak aboard his ship.

    Premiere date: Feb. 9, 2023 on Netflix.

  • Maite Perroni, stars as a forensics agent who sets out on a perilous journey to find the truth behind her own identity after she comes across a dying stranger who looks exactly like her. As she seeks answers, she uncovers a web of elaborate secrets and lies — and another doppelganger. Series is in Spanish.

    Premiere date: Feb. 22 on Netflix. 

  • Aimee Carrero stars in this new thriller series based on a novel, where a consultant is hired to improve business at an app-based gaming company. He becomes the “boss from hell” and his demands puts everything into question, including the employees lives.

    Premiere date: Feb. 24, 2023 on Amazon Prime.

 

March / April

John Leguizamo and Auli’i Cravalho star in Amazon’s “The Power.”

  • Sebastian Chacon and Camila Morrone star in this limited series TV adaptation of the bestselling book about the rise and fall of an iconic 1970s rock band, who reunites years later.

    Premiere date: March 3, 2023 on Amazon Prime.

  • Hulu’s new show, which is a sequel to the Mel Brooks comedy film, features a rotating cast of stars playing famous historical figures. Guest stars include Fred Armisen,  Arturo Castro, Ana Fabrega, Natalie Morales and Ana Ortiz.

    Premiere date: March 6, 2023 on Hulu.

  • Colombian American actor Carlos Valdes stars in this musical comedy about a couple falling in love in 1999. Also stars Emilia Suárez and Andréa Burns, who is Venezuelan and Jewish.

    Premiere date: March 24, 2023 on Hulu.

  • Comedy and film legend John Leguizamo and Auli’i Cravalho star in this sci-fi series about a world where teenage girls develop the power to electrocute people at will. Adapted from a best-selling book.

    Premiere date: March 31, 2023 on Amazon Prime.

  • Mexican American actress Marissa Davila stars in this “Grease” prequel TV shows that chronicles the teen girls who become the founding members of the “Pink Ladies.” Also features Johnathan Nieves.

    Premiere date: April 6, 2023 on Paramount+. Cancelled in June.

  • Puerto Rican actress Fabiola Andújar (not pictured) is part of the cast of this true-life crime mini series about a housewife who kills her neighbor after sleeping with her husband. This is the second mini series to adapt the story.

    Premiere date: April 27 on HBO Max.

  • Ecuadorian American actor Augusto Aguilera stars in this mini series about a woman who bonds with her stepdaughter when her husband goes missing.

    Premiere date: April 14 on Apple TV+.

 

May / June

Amazon’s new coming-of-age series “Primo” features a predominately Latino cast.

  • “White House Plumbers” tells the story of how Nixon’s own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds accidentally toppled the presidency they were zealously trying to protect. Stars Tony Plana as burglar Eugenio Martínez. The miniseries features Yul Vazquez, Nelson Ascencio and Alexis Valdés.

    Premiere date: May 1, 2023 on HBO.

  • Music superstar Thalia shares the music that influenced her in this limited Spanish language series.

    Premiere date: May 2, 2023 on Paramount+

  • Rick Gomez stars as a maintenance worker and former smuggler of "relics" in this new dystopian show where a community lives in a huge underground silo.

    Premiere date: May 5, 2023 on Apple TV+

  • Puerto Rican actor Alexander Pineiro stars in this show about the investigation into the death of a college student that links a series of fires and a wealthy family.

    Premiere date: May 12, 2023 on Apple TV+. Show was cancelled after one season.

  • This shows is stacked with Latino talent. It’s a coming of age show about a wide-eyed 16-year-old being raised by his clever mother, Drea, and his five overbearing uncles. Primo stars Ignacio Diaz-Silverio , Johnny Rey Diaz , Christina Vidal, Martin Martinez and Carlos Santos.

    Premiere date: May 19, 2023 on Amazon Freevee.

  • Trey Santiago-Hudson, Karina Ortiz and Randy Gonzalez are expected to appear in the new spin-off series to the “Walking Dead.” The show follows Maggie and Negan who travel to a post-apocalyptic Manhattan cut off from the mainland and find it full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.

    Premiere date: June 18, 2023 on AMC.

  • Mexican American, non-binary actor Miss Benny leads the cast of Netflix’s new show “Glamorous” as Marco, a queer non gender conforming male, who gets a big break in the makeup industry. Also stars Dominican American actress Diana Maria Riva as Julia.

    Premiere date: June 22, 2023 on Netflix

  • Mexican actor Nicolas Cantu will play the main protagonist in this animated TV spin-off of the “King Kong” movie of the same name. Benjamin Bratt, who is of Peruvian and Quechan descent, will also star.

    Premiere date: June 22, 2023 on Netflix.

  • Dominican American actor Jharrel Jerome plays the lead role in this coming-of-age series. He is “Cootie” a 13-foot tall young Black man in Oakland, California who grows up hidden away and escapes to experience the real world.

    Premiere date: June 23, 2023 on Amazon Prime.

  • Mexican and Native American designer Veronica Valencia dives into a family’s heritage for inspiration to use in the redesign and renovation of their homes.

    Premiere date: June 29, 2023 on HGTV.

 

July

Zoe Saldaña as CIA agent Joe in spy thriller “Special Ops: Lioness.”

  • Puerto Rican Actress Justina Machado stars as Dolores, in “The Horror of Dolores Roach” which is based on a Spotify podcast. Dolores is released from prison after 16 years and returns home to find her neighborhood gentrified. She works as masseuse in the basement under an empanada shop, and comes up with a “secret ingredient” to help keep the shop afloat. Also stars Alejandro Hernandez and Judy Reyes.

    Release date: July 7, 2023 on Amazon Prime.

  • The show is based on a real-life program and follows a rough-around-the-edges young Marine named Cruz recruited to join the Lioness Engagement Team to help bring down a terrorist organization from within. Stars Brazilian/Canadian actress Laysla De Oliveira as Cruz Manuelos, and Zoe Saldaña as a CIA officer.

    Premiere date: July 23, 2023 on Paramount+.

  • Two episode docuseries about the rise and struggles of boxing champion Oscar de La Hoya.

    Premiere date: July 24, 2023 on HBO.

  • Colombian and Bolivian actress Stephanie Beatriz stars as new character “Quiet” in this TV adaptation of the popular video game “Twisted Metal.” In the show, a man is on a delivery run through a post-apocalyptic wasteland for an opportunity to change his life.

    Premiere date: July 27 on Peacock.

  • A goofy, gullible sea captain is hired to helm a high-end cruise ship and becomes the perfect fall guy for an illicit smuggling operation. Show stars Mexican American actor Alejandro Edda.

    Premiere date: July 28, 2023 on Netflix.

 

August & Fall

Rosario Dawson takes on the lead role in Disney’s “Ashoka.”

  • Rosario Dawson, who is of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent, takes on the lead role in this “Star Wars” spin-off series. Set after the fall of the Empire, “Ahsoka” follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

    Premiere date: Aug. 23, 2023 on Disney+.

  • Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy will take on the iconic role of Monkey D. Luffy in Netflix’s live action adaptation of the long-running anime “One Piece.” Godoy plays a rubber-skinned teenager who sets out to become King of the Pirates. Also stars Ilia Isorelýs Paulino.

    Premiere date: Aug. 31, 2023 on Netflix.

  • Actor John Leguizamo takes viewers on a chronological journey traveling throughout Mexico and the U.S. to shed light on both the known and lesser-known stories of Latino history.

    Premiere date: Sept. 19, 2023 on PBS.

  • This “John Wick” prequel series takes on the backstory of the assassin hotel “The Continental” and the rise of hotel manager Winston. The new show stars Mishel Prada, who is of Dominican, Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, as KD.

    Premiere date: Sept. 22, 2023 on Peacock.

  • This game show hosted by Jaime Camil is based on the traditional Latin game of chance. Each episode features two players going head-to-head choosing cards that can either add up to big prizes or reveal wild challenges.

    Premiere date: Oct. 2, 2023 on CBS.

  • Belizean actor Arlen Escarpeta stars in NBC’s “Found” which focuses on finding people of color who are reported missing and forgotten.

    Premiere date: Oct. 3, 2023 on NBC.

  • Paola Núñez is among the cast of Netflix’s new horror miniseries based on work of Edgar Allen Poe.

    Premiere date: Oct. 12, 2023 on Netflix.

  • This new show is about three friends trying to make it in the world of reggaeton. It stars Puerto Rican actor Tyler Dean Flores. Cast includes Santiago Cabrera and Genesis Rodriguez. The show is produced by music legend Daddy Yankee.

 

Shows With Premiere Dates Pending

The following new shows could potentially be released sometime in 2023.

  • Ironheart - The new superhero series is expected out in the fall on Disney+. Anthony Ramos to star.

  • Agatha Coven of Chaos - TV adaptation of the comic and “Wanda Vision” character Agatha. Aubrey Plaza is part of the cast, Expected to premiere in Winter 2023 on Disney+.
