New 2022 TV Shows Featuring Latinos & Hispanics

Networks have released a new slate of scripted shows in 2022. Only a few of these shows star Latinos or Hispanics in leading roles, proving that we still have a long way towards representation.

But on the bright side, most of these actors get to play parts that break out of the stereotypes of criminals, maids, sex objects and illegal immigrants. Roles include a superhero, fashion stylist, photographer, medic, CEO and winery owners.

How I Met Your Father

Honduran-Mexican American Francia Raisa, stars as fashion stylist Valentina in “How I Met Your Father”. The show is a spinoff of “How I Met Your Mother” and is about a close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps. Ashley Reyes plays a recurring role as surgical resident Hannah (Comedy).

Supernatural Academy

After discovering they are dragon-marked and cursed to serve the evil Dragon King, adversarial werewolf twins played by Latinas Larissa Dias, who is Brazilian, and Gigi Saul Guerrero, who is Mexican, must trust each other to save themselves, their Supernatural Academy and the world (Animation, Young Adult, Fantasy).

Premiere Date: January 20,2022 on Peacock.

Promised Land

"Promised Land" is an epic, generation-spanning drama about a Latino family, who owns a winery, vying for wealth and power in California's Sonoma Valley. Leading the majority Latino cast is Hollywood veteran star John Ortiz, who is Puerto Rican, as Joe Sandoval. The is written and executive produced by Matt Lopez. (Drama, show canceled after 1 season)

Premiere date: January 24, 2022 on ABC/Hulu.

The Endgame

Criminal mastermind Elena Federova played by Brazilian actress Morena Baccarin squares off against a principled FBI agent in this heist drama. (Crime, Drama).

Premiere Date: February 21, 2022 on NBC.

Our Flag Means Death

This new comedy show is (very) loosely based on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate, Vico Ortiz, (right) who is Puerto Rican, starts as pirate crew member Bonafica/Jim Jimenez. Fred Armisen (left)is part of the supporting cast as Geraldo, the bartender. Armisen is Venezuelan, German and Korean.

Premiere Date: March 3, 2022 on HBO Max.

Minx

Oscar Montoya, who is Colombian, steals every scene he’s in as Richie, an up and coming photographer. “MINX” is set in 1970s Los Angeles and centers around an earnest young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher to create the first erotic magazine for women.(Comedy).

Premiere date: March 17, 2022 on HBO Max.

DMZ

In this comic book adaptation, Rosario Dawson stars as Alma Ortega, a medic who searches for her lost son in the demilitarized zone. Dawson is Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican. The show also features Latinos Benjamin Bratt, Freddy Miyares, Venus Ariel. Rey Gallegos and Juani Feliz. (Drama, Sci-Fi, Miniseries).

Premiere Date: March 17, 2022 on HBO Max.

WeCrashed

Apple TV+’s “WeCrashed” stars American Ferrera as Elishia Kennedy, a raw-juice empire CEO. Ferrera is Honduran American. The show is inspired by the real-life story of WeWork, the coworking space company that grew into a global brand worth $47 billion in under a decade and then crashed. It also stars Jared Leto, who is of Spanish descent, as WeWork co-founder Adam Neumann. (Drama, Miniseries).

Premiere date: March 18, 2022 on Apple TV+.

Moon Knight

Oscar Isaac, who is Guatemalan, plays the superhero Moon Knight and his alter egos Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, mercenary Marc Spector and Egyptian god Khonsu in this comic book adaption. This is a groundbreaking role, Isaac is the first Latino to helm a Marvel superhero series. Isaac and Latina Victoria Alonso are producers. (Action, Fantasy, Miniseries).

The Garcias

It’s taken show creator Jeff Valdez, who is Mexican American, about 10 years to reboot the family-friendly “Brothers Garcia” series. The show picks up with the now grown up brothers and their families going on vacation with their parents . This is tone of two all Latino-family comedies currently on the air. Amazon’s “With Love” is set for Season 2. Netflix’s “Gentified” and “On My Block” have ended their runs. (Family, Comedy).

Killing It

Stephanie Nogueras, who is deaf and Puerto Rican, plays a woman who is trying to co-parent with her ex-husband who is pursuing the American dream by becoming a python catcher. (Comedy)

The Offer

“The Offer” TV series is based on producer Albert S. Ruddy's extraordinary, never-before-seen experiences of making "The Godfather” movie. Kirk Acevedo, who is Puerto Rican, will have a recurring role as FBI Special Agent Hale (Drama, miniseries).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Melissa Navia, who is Colombian-American, will play helmsman Lieutenant Erica Ortegas on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The show is based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise (Sci-fi, adventure).

Candy

Raúl Esparza plays defense attorney Don Crowder in this TV adaptation of the true crime of a 1980s suburban housewife who is accused of murdering a friend and neighbor (True Crime, miniseries).

Lincoln Lawyer

Mexican actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo stars in this TV adaptation of the bestselling novel, and movie of the same name. Garcia Rulfo plays the role of hotshot Los Angeles lawyer Mickey Haller who restarts his career — and his trademark Lincoln — when he takes on a murder case. (Crime, Drama)

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Puerto Ricans Desmin Borges and Natasha Lopez play the friends of protagonist Clare who realizes her childhood imaginary friend is actually her time traveling future husband, Henry. The series is the TV adaptation of the movie and novel (Drama).

Premiere Date: May 15, 2022 on HBO

Now & Then

A group of college best friends come together at a reunion 20 years later and must face a secret from their past in this bilingual thriller from Apple TV+. The all Latino cast includes Hollywood Puerto Rican icon Rosie Perez, who plays a detective named Flora (Crime, Drama).

Night Sky

Spanning space and time, Night Sky follows a couple who, years ago, discovered a chamber buried in their backyard which inexplicably leads to a strange, deserted planet. Argentine actress Julieta Zylberberg stars as Stella, a mother in Argentina and Rocío Hernández as Toni, Stella's shy daughter. Hernández is also Argentine (Sci-fi).

Premiere date: May 20 on Amazon Prime.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” begins 10 years after “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”. This limited series features Puerto Rican actor Jimmy Smits who reprises his role as Bail Organa. (Sci-fi, fantasy)

Premiere date: May 27 on Disney+

Ultra Violet & The Black Scorpion

The series stars Scarlett Estevez (“BUNK’D”) as Violet Rodriguez, a Mexican-American teenager who is chosen by a magical luchador mask to be a superhero, like her uncle, Black Scorpion. The show has a predominately Latino cast with J.R. Villarreal as Black Scorpion, Juan Alfonso as Violet’s father, Marianna Burelli as her mother and Brandon Rossel as her brother.

Premiere Date: June 3, 2022 on Disney.

Queer as Folk

Cuban American Johnny Sibilly, plays lawyer Noah Hernandez, on Peacock’s reboot of “Queer as Folk”. The series explores a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy.

Premiere Date: June 9, 2022 on Peacock.

Gordita Chronicles

In this TV adaptation of the novel, a Dominican family tries to live the American Dream in 1980s Miami. Stars a predominately latino cast that includes Olivia Goncalves, Diana Maria Riva, Juan Javier Cardenas, Savannah Nicole Ruiz, Noah Rico, and Dascha Polanco. Update: Cancelled.

Premiere date: June 23 on HBO Max

Menudo: Forever Young

This limited docuseries chronicles the rise and fall of the most iconic Latin American boy band in history, showing a behind the scenes look of the world of the popular teen idols’ global tours, magazine covers, ‘80s outfits, and screaming fangirls. But the four-part documentary also exposes that behind the glitz and glamor was a web of abuse and exploitation.

The Bear

A young chef with a fine dining background returns home to Chicago to run his family’s sandwhich shop with a rough around the edges crew. Stars Latina Liza Colón-Zayas.

Loot

Award-winning “Pose” actress Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who is transgender and Afro-Puerto Rican plays Sofia Salinas, the head honcho of a charitable foundation in Maya Ruduloph’s latest show. The show is about a woman played by Rudolph who figures out what to do with her $87 billion divorce settlement (Comedy).

The Terminal List

“Mayans M.C.” star J.D. Pardo, who is Argentine-Salvadorian American, will play recurring character Tony Liddel, one of the youngest leaders of an FBI Task Force in the new show “The Terminal List.” Based on the best-selling novel by Jack Carr, The Terminal List follows James Reece (Chris Pratt) after his entire platoon of Navy SEALs is ambushed during a high-stakes covert mission.

Premiere Date: July 1, 2022 on Amazon Prime.

Maggie

Psychic Maggie starts seeing glimpses of her own future after meeting a stranger. The show tries to answer the question of whether you can fall in love if you know how it ends? David Del Rio will play Ben. Angelique Cabral is a series regular.

Boo, Bitch

The show follows a high school senior who has lived most of her life flying safely under the radar. One night she tries to live an “epic life,” … only to wake up the next morning to learn that she’s a ghost. Jason Genao, (not pictured) who is Dominican American plays a character called Devon, who has a grudge against the main character.

Resident Evil

Netflix is bringing the video game and movie franchise to TV in their new series. Mexican actress Paola Núñez is among the main cast. The show will be set in the “Year 2036 - 14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse. (Sci-fi)

Keep Breathing

In this survival thriller, Melissa Barrera plays a woman whose plane crashes in Canadian wilderness. This is a limited series.

The Resort

A couple celebrating their 10-year anniversary at a resort stumbles upon an old unsolved crime. Stars Luis Gerardo Méndez as resort security.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin

Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago. This “Pretty Little Liars” prequel stars Maia Reficco (center) who is Argentinian.

This Fool

Inspired by the life of stand up comic Chris Estrada, the series centers around a 30-year old who still lives at home and finds any excuse to avoid dealing with his own problems.

A League of Their Own

Based on the movie of the same name, the TV series takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of female professional baseball players as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the league and outside of it during World War II. Roberta Colindrez (left) stars as pitcher Lupe. Priscilla Delgado (right) plays Esti, one of the fastest base runners on the team.

Hamster & Gretel

Kevin and his younger sister, Gretel, are about to be bestowed superpowers by space aliens. But instead it’s Gretel and her pet hamster (named Hamster) who suddenly have new abilities. Kevin must figure out how to work with Gretel and Hamster to protect their city. This animated series is also about a multicultural white and Latino family. Stars Michael Cimino as Kevin and Carolina Ravassa as their mother. Latina Joanna Hausmann serves as a co-producer/story editor.

She-Hulk

Puerto Rican actor Josh Segarra plays a fellow attorney helping She-Hulk and her alter ego Jennifer Walters take on cases involving super heroes and villains.

Sprung

From creator Greg Garcia, Sprung follows a convicted criminal determined to turn his life around after serving more than two decades in prison. He winds up working with a group of former inmates to use their criminal expertise for a good purpose. Stars Shakira Barrera and Phillip Garcia.

Echoes

Rosanny Zayas stars as a detective in this new limited series for Netflix. “Echoes” is about a twin trying to find out what happened to her sister who disappeared.

Lost Ollie

Gina Rodriguez stars in Netflix’s new miniseries “Lost Ollie”. The show is about a stuffed patchwork rabbit who tries to find his way back to his best friend a young boy. Rodriguez plays the boy’s mom.

Mo

Mexican actress Teresa Ruiz stars in this new show about an Palestinian refugee trying to get citizenship and trying to provide for his family. Ruiz plays Mo’s independent girlfriend.

Little Demon

“Little Demon” stars Aubrey Plaza as Laura, a woman who tries to live a normal life with her Antichrist daughter, Chrissy but is constantly thwarted by monstrous forces, including Satan, who yearns for custody of his daughter's soul in this new FX animated show.

Premiere date: August 25, 2022 on FXX.

Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power

Set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. Ismael Cruz Córdova, who is Puerto Rican, will play an elf called Arondir. J.A. Bayona, who is Spanish, is one of the shows directors and executive producers (Fantasy).

The Imperfects

Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy stars as Juna, a Chupacabra/human hybrid in this new sci-fi show. In “The Imperfects” three people who have undergone experiments without their knowledge join forces to find the scientist responsible — and a cure.

Devil in Ohio

In this new limited series based on a novel, a hospital physiatrist shelters a patient. It turns out the girl is running away from a devil-worshipping cult and they want her back. Gerardo Celasco, (pictured left) stars as Detective Lopez, the lead investigator in the teen’s case.

Premiere Date: Sept. 2, 2022 on Netflix.

Wedding Season

Peruvian and French-Canadian actress Rosa Salazar stars as Katie in this new rom-com/mystery/action limited TV series. In Wedding Season Katie and Stefan fall for each other at a wedding and begin an affair, despite Katie already having a fiancé. Two months later at Katie’s wedding, her new husband and his entire family are murdered. The police think Stefan did it. Stefan thinks Katie did it.

Monarch

“Monarch” is a multi-generational musical drama about the Romans, a leading family of country music. Show stars Mexican actress Martha Higareda as a woman trying to get her daughter signed to the Roman’s music label.

Vampire Academy

Daniela Nieves stars as Princess Vasilissa "Lissa' Dragomiri in this TV series adaptation of the movie and novel, “Vampire Academy”. She plays a vampire royal trying to stay alive while at boarding school, while many vie for her throne.

Premiere date: Sept. 15, 2022 on Peacock.

Quantum Leap

Mason Alexander Park, who is Mexican and Spanish, plays lead programmer Ian Wright in the rebooted “Quantum Leap” sci-fi series.

Premiere date: Sept. 19, 2022 on Peacock.

Reboot

Rose Abdoo plays a veteran TV writer in this new series. Abdoo is of Dominican descent. In this show-within-a-show, the original cast of a 2000s era sitcom is brought back for a reboot.

Premiere date: Sept. 20, 2022 on Hulu.

Andor

“Andor” tells the story of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. Diego Luna again reprises his role as mercenary Cassian. The series will follow Cassian as he becomes a rebel hero. Also stars Adria Arjona.

The Rookie: Feds

This spinoff of “The Rookie” will focus on the oldest rookie in the academy. The show also stars TV show veteran Felix Solis, who is Puerto Rican, as Special Agent Matthew Garza.

Reasonable Doubt

A talented Los Angeles defense attorney takes juggles cases, kids, and a separation from her husband in this new Hulu series. The show stars Latino Victor Rasuk as Mike Llanas, a district attorney.

So Help Me Todd

A razor-sharp, meticulous attorney hires her talented but scruffy, aimless son as her law firm’s in-house investigator in this odd-couple show. Stars Rosa Arredondo, who is Dominican.

Entergalactic

Entergalactic is a new animated miniseries starring Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi as Jabari, a charming, streetwear-clad artist on the cusp of real success. Kid Cudi is Black and Mexican. His sister Maisha Mescudi is part of the cast as well as Arturo Castro, who is Guatemalan.

Premiere Date: Sept. 30, 2022 on Netflix.

East New York

Latinos Jimmy Smits, Rueben Santiago-Hudson and Elizabeth Rodriguez star in this new show about a female deputy police inspector in East New York, who has a creative approach.

Premiere Date: Oct. 2, 2022 at 9:30 p.m. (ET) on CBS.

Alaska Daily

Hilary Swank plays an award-winning investigative journalist who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace to join a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage on a journey to find both personal and professional redemption. Swank is of Mexican descent. The show also stars Pablo Castelblanco, who is Colombian, as Gabriel Tovar.

Premiere Date: Oct. 6 on ABC.

Walker:

Independence

Gabriela Quezada stars in this prequel to “Walker”. In the 1880s, a woman seeks justice for her husband who was killed before becoming the sheriff.

Premiere Date: Oct. 6, 2022 at 9 p.m. (ET) on CW.

Fire Country

In this scripted show , convicts are paired with firefighters battling Northern California wildfires in exchange for reduced sentences. Stars Kevin Alejandro, who is Mexican, Spanish and English. Also stars Latina Stephanie Arcila.

Premiere Date: Oct. 7 at 9 p.m. (ET) on CBS.

Let the Right One In

Latinos Demián Bichir and Madison Taylor Baez star in this horror series based a Swedish novel and film. They play a father and daughter whose lives are changed when she is turned into a vampire.

Premiere Date: Oct. 7, 2022 on Showtime

Professionals

A security professional is guarding a client, when things go wrong. The new show stars Spanish actress Elena Anaya.

Premiere Date: Oct. 11, 2022 at 8 p.m. (ET) on CW.

The Watcher

Italian-Cuban American Bobby Cannavale plays an man who moves his family from New York City to the New Jersey suburbs only to start receiving threatening letters from an unknown source dubbed “The Watcher” in this new whodunit series.

Premiere Date: Oct. 13, 2022 on Netflix.

From Scratch

In this romance, drama miniseries series, an American woman loves and loses a Sicilian man she meets in Italy. Based on Tembi Locke's best-selling memoir. Stars Zoe Saldaña, who is Puerto Rican and Dominican, as the main character.

Premiere Date: Oct. 25, 2022 on Netflix.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

Legendary horror and fantasy director Guillermo del Toro is an executive producers, co-showrunner and writer for this eight-episode anthology series. Two of the episodes star Latinos actors. “Dreams in Witch House” stars Ismael Cruz Córdova who is Puerto Rican. The episode “Lot 36” stars Mexican actress Elpidia Carrillo.

Premiere Date: Oct. 25, 2022 on Netflix

Blockbuster

This new workplace comedy is about employees at the last Blockbuster video store trying to keep the store open and relevant. Show was co-created by Latina Vanessa Ramos. The new series stars fellow Latinos Melissa Fumero (center), Olga Merediz( far left), and Tyler Alvarez ( far right).

Premiere Date: Nov. 3, 2022 on Netflix.

Lopez vs. Lopez

George and Mayan Lopez star in this working-class family comedy about dysfunction, reconnection and all the pain and joy in between. This will be George Lopez’s third sitcom. The “George Lopez” show about a Latino family ran for six seasons and “Lopez” ran for two seasons.

Premiere Date: Nov. 4, 2022 on NBC.

Dangerous Liaisons

“Dangerous Liaisons” is a bold prelude of Laclos’ classic 18th century novel focusing on the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont. Driven to right the wrongs of their past, we follow the couple as they rise from the slums of Paris and scale the heights of the French aristocracy. Stars Paloma Faith, who is English and Spanish.

Premiere Date: Nov. 13, 2022 at 8 p.m. (ET) on Starz.

Welcome to Chippendales

Puerto Rican Robin De Jesús is part of the cast of this new true-crime saga about Chippendales founder. He plays the right hand man to Somen 'Steve' Banerjee, who creates the world’s greatest male-stripping empire.

Wednesday

This spin off of the Addams Family movies focuses on Wednesday Addams. Her macabre prank get her kicked out of school and she lands at the Nevermore Academy, where her parents went to school. There she discovers a murder mystery. The show stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley.

Premiere date: Nov. 23, 2022 on Netflix.

Willow

Disney + is launching a new live-action fantasy adventure TV series based on the classic 1988 feature film. The story picks up after the events of the movie. In a magical world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures flourish, the adventure continues, as an unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home. Stars Latinos Ruby Cruz and Tony Revolori.

Premiere Date: November 30, 2022 on Disney+

Who Killed Jenni Rivera?

The docuseries explores of the mysterious death of Latin superstar Jenni Rivera through intimate footage and interviews.

Premiere date: December 6, 2022 on Peacock.

National Treasure: Edge of History

Lisette Olivera stars as Jess Valenzuela whose life is turned upside down when stranger gives her a clue to a centuries-old treasure that might be connected to her long-dead father. This show is a spin-off of the “National Treasure” film franchise.

Premiere date: December 14, 2022 on Disney Plus.

Best Man: The Final Chapters

Melissa De Sousa returns as Shelby in this TV show sequel to “The Best Man” movie franchise. De Sousa is Panamanian American. The original cast returns for the 10-episode limited series where relationships evolve and past grievances resurface.
